Certified Transactional Analyst Psychotherapy (CTA)

The CTA professional examination requires the completion of a four part case study describing the student's training and practice, and six essays on theoretical subjects. Having obtained a pass for the written work, the final step in qualification is an oral examination on the student’s work and practice, demonstrating their competence as a practising psychotherapist.

Candidates for the MSc present the case study and theoretical essays from their written CTA examination as their master’s project to Queen Margaret's University. Acceptance by QMU gives the award of the Master’s degree.

The CTA allows the successful candidate to become registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). The CPTI training programme is designed to enable all students to comply with the UKCP registration requirements. Registration is through the Institute of Transactional Analysis (ITA), a member organisation of the UKCP. CPTI is a registered training establishment of the ITA.

CPTI runs an Extended Training Group (ETG) which provides support and supervision to students working on MSc projects and the CTA. Two years of ETG costs are included in the fee for the MSc TA Psychotherapy with CTA.
