CPTI
The Counselling & Psychotherapy Training Institute (CPTI) is based in Edinburgh and provides professional training in Transactional Analysis (TA) counselling and psychotherapy. TA can be used as a therapeutic model in different settings, including in-depth psychotherapy and as a cognitively based time-limited or brief therapy.

About Us
CPTI offers MSc courses in TA counselling and psychotherapy; together with short courses introducing different counselling and psychotherapy modalities and courses providing continuing professional development (CPD) to counsellors, psychotherapists, medical and health professionals, social workers and others. Most courses also offer individuals the opportunity for personal development.
The dual aims of CPTI are to provide an excellent quality of teaching for qualifications that meet the requirements of present and likely future validating or regulating authorities and to give the individual an education in the subject area, together with the opportunity for personal and professional development.
Within a small organisation, CPTI provides an exciting educational programme leading to professional and academic qualifications where the needs of the students are kept in the foreground for the planning and delivery of the courses.
Professional Recognition
CPTI is a Registered Training Establishment of the Institute of Transactional Analysis (ITA). The Training Programme meets the requirements of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) under the auspices of the ITA.
Additional professional recognition is given by a TA Counselling Diploma validated by COSCA (Counselling and Psychotherapy in Scotland), and academic recognition by MSc degrees in Counselling and Psychotherapy, validated by Queen Margaret University.
It is the stated policy of CPTI to ensure that the programmes meet current professional requirements and the likely requirements for a future registration system. CPTI achieves this as a Registered Training Establishment of the ITA and an organisational member of COSCA. CPTI recognises that health and education are devolved to the Scottish Parliament and ensures that training meets the requirements of the Scottish academic system and the health service in Scotland.
The quality of training outcome at CPTI is further ensured by the engagement of external moderators and external examiners. Staff members at CPTI are always available to answer questions on the validation and outcomes of its training programmes.
Course Instructors
The courses at CPTI are delivered by authorised Transactional Analysis Trainers designated Provisional Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst (PTSTA) or Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst (TSTA). The trainers also provide supervision and are themselves practising therapists.
Professional Affiliation
All CPTI trainers are members of the
European Association of Transactional Analysis (EATA) through the ITA.
CPTI students join the ITA initially as Regular Members, an interest membership category open to all who have completed the
TA101 Introduction to TA course.
CPTI students become Student Members of the ITA on completion of the Foundation Year of training.
Administration & Student Advice
CPTI consider that the support of students by knowledgeable and experienced staff is essential to the successful provision of training. Students always have access to the administration team by email, telephone and, where appropriate, by personal meeting. The CPTI office is available five days a week and includes library and computer facilities for students. Students are further supported by the Student Advisor.
Background
CPTI is based in Edinburgh and was founded in 2002 to take over the training workshops offered by a sister organisation, the
Edinburgh Institute for Counselling & Psychotherapy. Over this time CPTI has developed courses to a high standard in counselling and psychotherapy.
